Back Care Awareness Week

The 7th October marks the start of back care awareness week. Dru Yoga can really help with the care of the back and the spine. Each year 30 million sickness absence days are lost in the UK due to back pain and musculoskeletal conditions costing British Employers more than £5 billion.

Dru yoga has been shown to be effective in the treatment of low back pain and stress and is known for being a particularly safe style of yoga. Research first published in September 2012 in the Journal of Occupational medicine showed that Dru yoga can reduce back pain at work. This study by researchers at Bangor University showed employers that a wellbeing programme that includes yoga can have a significant impact not only on reducing stress but also reducing back pain.

More than 80 participants were recruited from Conwy County Council and randomised into a yoga group who received one 50 minute Dru yoga session each week for 8 weeks and a 20 minute DVD for home practice while a control group received no intervention. When compared with the control group the yoga group’s scores were significantly less for perceived stress, back pain, sadness and hostility and were higher for feeling self assured, attentive and serene. The results indicate that a work place yoga intervention can reduce perceived stress and back pain and improve psychological well being.
