EMDR with Emma Mathews Therapy
What is it and what can I expect
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy which helps you to work through traumatic memories in a safe way, helps your brain’s memory networks to connect, and allows your brain to process traumatic memories. EMDR can also help with other anxiety and mood problems.
The sessions needed will vary and can depend on the type of difficult you are having and its severity. Usually following assessment I can give you a better indication of how long therapy may take, typically it can be between 5 and 20 sessions, this can be reviewed as therapy progresses. The first appointment would be an initial assessment to discuss your needs and the different options for therapy.
Information you provide during a therapy session is confidential, it however you tell me something that indicates you may be in danger or at risk, or that other people may be at risk of harm, the I would have a professional duty to inform another professional, usually your GP.
What is it best for?
EMDR can treat theses problems:
- Anxiety, including social anxiety & health anxiety
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – including Birth Trauma
- Low Self-esteem
