What is it?
The NMWLP offers you medical support, advice, education and treatment to help you on your weight loss journey, which is approved by nursing and obesity associations.
Part of this service may include the use of weight loss injections.
This class of medications are known as GLP-1 analogues (incretin mimetics). This type of medication works by increasing the levels of hormones called ‘incretins’.
There are two options to choose from, a once a day self-injectable pen, containing a prescription only medication called Liraglutide also known as Saxenda ® or a once a weekly injection containing the medication Semaglutide ® also known as Ozempic. You may be more familiar from media coverage with the term ‘the skinny jab’ or ‘skinny pen’ which is Saxenda®, used by various celebrities with incredible results. Studies though have found that Ozempic® is three times more effective with weight reduction than Saxenda®. These treatments offer effective and reliable weight loss by reducing hunger and controlling cravings.
How does it work?
Your body naturally produces an appetite hormone that helps to regulate your hunger levels. In overweight people it has been found that this hormone is much lower making appetite regulation a constant battle. The injection works exactly like this hormone, helping to regulate your appetite.
The injection makes you feel fuller for longer therefore your food intake is reduced. Your snacking should stop, your portion sizes will be reduced and the weight will start to drop off. The strong cravings that often sabotage diets will also go away. It will also become more evident that the food you do consume you will want it to be nutritious and tasty, which will in turn initiate a positive change in your eating habits.
GLP-1 analogues also stimulates insulin secretions and reduces glucagon (both hormones released by the pancreas) which can help reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes and help prevent heart disease and strokes.
These medications have been approved in the UK to help with weight loss, in conjunction with a balanced diet and an active lifestyle. They can also be used alongside other weight loss plans like slimming world, weight watches, 5:2 diet etc.

What is the process?
Once the initial medical form is completed and approved, you will then be invited to have an in-depth, face to face medical consultation, where we also take measurements and determine
whether you are suitable for treatment. If this is the case, medication may then be prescribed.
You will be fully supported throughout the whole process, with weekly and then monthly check-ups, with 24/7 on call contact.
Some patients will stop the medical treatment once they have reached their weight goal, others will continue on it for the foreseeable future, the choice will be yours.
Are there any side-effects?
To avoid side-effects, we start on a low dose and increase slowly. Patients will have different responses to treatment so may need higher doses than others.
Side-effects can be nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation. If you do start with any of these, we will be able to give you lots of tips to help minimise them and in time these side effects usually pass.
Is it safe?
GLP-1s are safe for many people but there are links with thyroid cancer that you should be aware of. The drug is fully approved by the NHS and the FDA. During your consultation we will discuss your medical and family history to assess if this treatment is safe for you.
Yes, it does. Both Ozempic® and Saxenda® have been studied extensively in multiple trials, evidence clearly shows that more than twice as many patients achieve 5-10% body weight loss compared to diet and exercise alone.
How much weight will I lose?
This varies from person to person but expect to lose a minimum of 5% of body weight after completing 12 weeks of treatment.
