What is it?
BOTOX® is a drug made from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum called botulinum toxin.
How does it work?
BOTOX® works by preventing nerve impulses from reaching the muscles, which causes the muscle to relax. Fewer muscle contractions means your wrinkles will relax soften and smooth out, giving a brighter and more youthful appearance.
Is it safe?
Yes, BOTOX® is safe. It is a widely researched and extensively tested drug. Due to ongoing ground breaking research, BOTOX® is being discovered to be useful in many areas of medicine, including chronic migraines, bladder incontinence and muscle spasms.
As with any other type of medical procedure, there are certain risks, complications and side effects that can occur, but are rare. These will all be discussed in full during your consultation.
Where does BOTOX® work best?
The upper third of the face is where BOTOX® is most commonly used, reducing dynamic wrinkles caused by years of frowning, squinting, smiling and concentrating.
Frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines and crows feet are the three main areas treated. However, BOTOX® can also be used on other areas of the mid and lower face to smooth away wrinkles, correct facial features or generally improve a patients overall appearance. These treatments include:
- Bunny Lines – Aim to reduce lines on the lateral and/or dorsal aspect of nose that may be naturally present in some patients when they smile, laugh, frown or speak
- Peri-Oral Lines (lip lines) – Aim to reduce or prevent longitudinal wrinkles of the upper and lower lips and can make lips look fuller
- Dimpled Chin (cobblestone effect) – Aim to reduce this effect
Who carries out the treatment?
