What is Sports Massage Therapy?
Sports Massage Therapy was designed for treating athletes and sports people and is also very useful for anyone suffering from muscular tension, chronic pain, altered range of motion or postural issues.
Occupational, emotional, and postural stress can produce many similar characteristics of sports injuries. The purpose of a sports massage is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissue. This treatment can help prevent those niggling injuries that get in the way of performance and achievement, whether a client is an athlete, a regular keep-fitter or goes jogging once a week. Sports massage is a deeper more intense treatment specifically designed to reduce muscular tension and ease deep muscular pain and discomfort.
Treatment involves various elements of a full body massage and often a combination of other techniques involving deep tissue massage ad elements of Swedish massage and encompasses stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response techniques. The purpose is to get patients to a position where they are no longer experiencing discomfort or a limited range of motion in the most effective way bringing about optimum performance and providing injury-free training whilst minimising the chance of injury.
The benefits of Sports Massage Therapy are as follows;
- increased relaxation following the massage
- increased lymph system activity
- reduced muscle soreness
- improved performance
- stress relief
- improved circulation
- reduction in blood pressure
- increased range of movement
- reduction of injury time
- release of feel good endorphins
- improved posture.
