Healthy Aging and Hypnotherapy

image old hands young hands by PublicDomainPictures from PixabayWhen someone mentions hypnosis or hypnotherapy there are a lot of images I'm sure are conjured up. Some might be of TV celebrities like Paul McKenna and others might link to common habits or issues hypnosis is linked to helping, such as stopping smoking or pain during birth.

If I mention healthy aging though I am sure this is a topic you might not consider as being related to hypnotherapy. Have you ever considered that the way we think has an impact on the effects on our body and mind?

Over the years as we begin to age we experience a range of emotions from happy through to sad and every variation of emotion in between. We get to repeat patterns and become good at what we repeat, even if this is not something positive for our health. These 'things' become second nature to us and this includes how often we feel certain emotions. This is because of neural pathways, pathways of neurons inside us which fire off when we do something. Frequent travelling of these pathways lead to linking and you might have heard the phrase ‘What fires together, Wires Together.” These linked neural pathways are a place where memory is built and chemical reactions are taking place faster than fibre optic broadband. The more we fire them, or metaphorically tread the path, the more easily they fire next time

Wiring and Firing Together

In the brain world, where billions and billions of neurons fire off every millisecond of the day, is not always firing the way we would like.  Inside our brains we have chemicals such as Dopamine, a hormone which helps us in motivation in the pleasure/reward system. We have Serotonin, which helps our moods and appetite, as well as sleep and another called Cortisol. Cortisol is the hormone released during periods of stress. It effectively is our body's response in the fight or flight reactions and in this way it heightens you with adrenalin and halts what in evolutionary terms are non important functions such as digestion. Cortisol is also what the body uses to wake you in the morning. These are just a few of the chemicals that get released in and around our brains everyday.

These chemicals contribute and are the reason that you feel the way you feel. Too much Cortisol is what we often call the 'stress response' and could lead to unhealthy eating habits, drinking, lack of sleep and all the usual suspects.  People low in Serotonin are once again prone to anxiety and binge eating, while finally too little Dopamine can leave you unfocused and unmotivated.

As as we age we become more experienced with life’s up’s and down’s and the chemicals released in response to this have all been firing and wiring away and influencing your responses to events to become the person you are right now. The question you have to ask yourself is 'Do I like who I am and how I respond to events?'. If the answer is not a resounding YES, then what are you going to do about it?

Taking Charge of Your Mind

The good news is you can do something about it! Hypnosis is a great and safe way of you re-establishing yourself into the person you want to be by dealing directly with your mindset, focus on what gets you motivated, interested, happy and loved. In tackling what is going on at a subconscious level you can turn the Serotonin up and become happy again, get the Dopamine levels rising with motivation and finally lower Cortisol. All this because your brain is an amazing part of you which responds to the way you process information.  The good news is that you can control it.

If you want to age healthy and your mindset is adversely impacting your life then take action. Remember pathways that fire together wire together.
